In 1993 I started the Speech Applications group, and was its Principal Investigator until 1998. For more information on speech and user interface design, see my CHI '95 paper "Designing SpeechActs: Issues in Speech User Interfaces."

On March 16, 1996 I organized Internet Appreciation Day, an educational event for Chelmsford teachers. I subsequently was involved in the much larger Massachusetts NetDay effort to get all the schools in the state connected to the Internet. As part of that effort, I designed two web sites for schools in Lowell, MA, I created a School Web Site Development Guide, and I put together a course called "An Introduction to the Internet for Teachers."

Before starting the Speech Applications Group in 1993, I worked on a team to prototype ideas for Sun's future workstation environment. The ideas generated by this group became the basis for the Starfire video produced by Bruce Tognazzini.

Prior to joining Sun in 1991, I worked as Project Coordinator at the Brown University Institute for Research in Information and Scholarship (IRIS). During my 9 years at IRIS, I focused on user interface design in the context of an integrated, multi-user hypertext system called Intermedia.

While working at IRIS and at Sun, I have published a variety of papers on hypertext, user interface design, and speech applications. See my List of Publications for more information. I have also served on the organizing and program committees of conferences such as Hypertext, CHI, UIST, ASSETS, and CSCW.
