Summary
The FPGA join project forms one part of a number of different research proposals currently underway to look at innovative architectures to support large database joins on parallel hardware. The Stanford proposal is to follow up on a paper from Oracle & Intel Labs on using wide vector units for sort merge join that predicted better results on future wide vector hardware than the hashing algorithms that are currently preferred. This proposal will implement a large vector architecture by building such a vector machine using FPGAs.
