Randall Smith

Randy Smith is a Consulting Member of the Technical Staff at Oracle Laboratories, working in the Machine Learning Research Group. He has worked on many and varied projects during his over two decades here. He was a founding member of the Sun Small Programmable Object Technology (Sun SPOT) project, the co-designer of the (award winning!) Self language, and originator of Self's Morphic user interface framework, which has been emulated in several other languages.

His somewhat eclectic research interests include Collaborative Computing, Computer-mediated Communication, Educational Computing, Object Oriented Programming, Theoretical Physics, Mathematical Modeling, User Interface Frameworks, Novel Interaction Techniques, and Wireless Sensor Networks. Most recently he has been working to optimize the NetSuite product with several patented algorithms for shipping management, and has worked with Oracle Academy to create RelativityLand, an interactive simulation environment with supporting educations videos, slides, and exercises to teach Einstein's theory of special relativity.
