Summary

The work of the external PI centers on the use of structured insurance claims data as a “backbone” onto which semi- and unstructured EMR data can be attached. The purpose of this work is to improve the way comparative safety and effectiveness questions can be answered, by providing the data needed to improve assessment of causality beyond simple statistical associations. In their work, the investigators plan to develop: a framework in which a claims-data backbone is augmented with relevant data extracted from electronic medical records; an approach to put the framework into use to improve assessment of causal relationships between prescription drug use and health outcomes; A description of the creation of this framework, with specific references to the use of Oracle and other technologies.
